The tools are already in your hands

The Magician is the one who turns energy into something real. He’s a maker. Will, action. Skill, resources.

The Magician always says a person has talent. And that you already have everything you need to make your idea happen. Focus, confidence in your own strength. A clear head and plenty of energy. The feeling of “I can shape my life and change it by deciding to.”

So the card’s advice is simple: take the initiative. The tools are already in your hands. Act boldly. Put yourself out there. And use your talents and what you know.

The first step after the Fool

The Magician is card I. He comes right after the Fool, so at this point a person hasn’t gone far — but they’ve already made a key shift.

The Fool took the first step into the unknown. He doesn’t know where he’s going yet, he trusts life and acts mostly on instinct. The Magician has figured something out: “I’m not just walking this path — I can steer it.” He’s past the moment of total uncertainty and has his first taste of his own strength, will and ability to choose.

On the Magician’s table lie the four suits — wands, cups, swords and pentacles. His task is to learn to use everything he already has: will, feelings, mind and material resources.

Talent waiting for a step

In a reading the Magician points to talent and pushes you to step forward. If it’s about work — work for yourself. Here money comes from your own talents. It’s a good card for consultants and people running their own business. What counts is taking action, being effective and being good at what you do.

In relationships it’s about being able to talk things through and agree. The Magician can also mean a relationship that’s only just starting.

When the power points the wrong way

The Magician has a shadow side. The Magician is a manipulator. Someone who can vanish without warning and dodge anything that’s inconvenient for him. Manipulation, charlatanism. A toxic person who uses people for his own ends.

A woman once asked me: what’s going on between me and him? The Magician came up. And I told her: she will suffer from his manipulation. Or she’ll be the one doing the manipulating.

Next to the Moon, the Magician means illusions, self-deception, fraud; backstage schemes “in the fog,” manipulation through fear, shady projects with fuzzy goals.

And there’s one more shadow, a quiet one: impostor syndrome. And spreading your talents too thin — lots of ideas, none of them carried through.
