The Minor Arcana

The main difference: scale

The Major Arcana (the trumps): the big frame of a life. Big laws, archetypes, the lessons you have to learn, the major stages. They answer: “Where is my life taking me, and why? What lesson do I need to learn?”

The Minor Arcana (four suits: Wands, Cups, Swords, Pentacles): everyday detail. Daily life, concrete actions, feelings, thoughts, current tasks, what’s going on around you. They answer: “How exactly is this happening? What do I do about it, here and now?”

Big turns

The Major Arcana are turning points and points of no return. When a Major card comes up (especially several), the situation has moved beyond normal planning. Bigger forces are at work — the weight of past choices, or change you can’t avoid.

Example: switching jobs in the Minor Arcana is just new duties or a new salary. Losing a job or changing career through a Major card — Death, the Tower, the Wheel of Fortune — is a change that goes to the root of your whole life. You come out of it a different person.

The themes: the Major Arcana describe the stages everyone goes through: growing up, crises, a new way of seeing the world, facing cause and effect (Justice), the old falling apart (the Tower), becoming whole (the World).

The Fool’s Journey

The 22 Major Arcana are laid out as the Fool’s Journey, from the Fool to the World. It’s a picture of a life:

1. The start (the Fool, the Magician, the High Priestess): birth, pure potential, first knowledge, intuition.
2. Finding your place among people (the Empress, the Emperor, the Hierophant, the Lovers): building structure, a family, values, choosing your place in the world.
3. Tests and crises (the Wheel of Fortune, Justice, the Hanged Man, Death, the Devil, the Tower): hard reality, temptation, illusions breaking, deep crises and clearing things out through pain.
4. Wisdom and putting it together (the Star, the Moon, the Sun, Judgement, the World): hope, real self-understanding, clarity, renewal, a new level.

The Minor Arcana (Ace to Ten, plus the court cards) show how you actually live through those stages: what makes you happy, who you fight with, how much you earn, how you get through the routine between the big crises.

Major vs Minor at a glance

Level:

• Major: the big picture — a stage of life. Big laws, archetypes, turning points, lessons you can’t dodge.
• Minor: the small picture — daily life, one specific situation. Concrete actions, feelings, thoughts, money and things.

How much is up to you:

• Major: you’re a student of circumstances. Events come from outside and fighting them doesn’t help.
• Minor: you’re in charge. Things can be managed and depend on your choices.

Time:

• Major: long stretches — years, whole stages of growing up.
• Minor: days, weeks, months.

In practice:

• Major: Death / the Tower / the Wheel of Fortune — life changes completely, the old way of living falls apart.
• Minor: Three of Wands / Two of Pentacles — planning a trip, work tasks, juggling everyday things.

If Major cards dominate a reading, you’re in the middle of big change, and there’s no point fighting it — the job is to learn the lesson. If Minor cards dominate, it’s in your hands: your actions, choices and conversations decide it.

A Major card as a life lesson — the Wheel of Fortune, in a reading on “why can’t I get married.” “It speaks about your lesson going round in circles: you live the same scenario over and over, you pick the same type of partner… Until the lesson is learned, nothing will work: what hasn’t been lived through has to be repeated.” That’s the big level, where you’re a student of circumstances.

Minor cards as everyday life you can manage — Two of Pentacles + Ten of Pentacles. “Juggling day-to-day money tasks, balancing and small compromises lead over time to steady abundance, a family that does well and a solid long-term base.” The small level: it all comes down to your own concrete actions and choices.
