"Will My Ex Come Back?" How to Ask Tarot So You Actually See the Truth

Why "yes or no" is the wrong way to ask tarot about an ex - and the open questions that show what's really happening between you, not just what you want to hear.

“Will my ex come back?”, “Will we get back together?” This is one of the most popular questions tarot readers hear. It is a tender, painful topic, and that is exactly why the first thing that matters is what is pushing you to ask. Do you want this relationship back? Or is it simply hard for you to let this person go, so the question is less about them and more about you?

The answer decides what spread we do and what we ask the cards. So before any cards, a few things about your story.

What I will ask you before the reading

For the reading to be accurate, I need some context about the relationship:

  • how long ago you broke up;
  • who initiated it;
  • whether you are in any contact now, and in what form;
  • whether you are both free, or one of you is already in a new relationship;
  • whether either of you is currently reaching out to the other.

This context helps me interpret the spread better and more correctly. The cards show the picture; knowing your situation lets me read that picture without distortion.

And there is one more question I almost always ask: what would you yourself want to change, so that you could feel good next to this person again? People often learn more about their relationship from this one question than from everything else.

Feel the weight of your question

Before the reading, it matters that you do more than word your question. Let it pass through you, through your state and your emotions, and feel what this question is truly worth to you. What exactly do you want to know? What will you do with the answer? A question you have lived with answers far deeper than one thrown out in passing.

Questions that give you more than yes or no

A very good question to clarify and put to the tarot: “What is really happening between us right now?” Here we can see what this person actually feels toward you. Not what they text, or what their silence seems to say, but what lives inside them.

If your ex tends toward depressive moods or endless self-digging, and you know this about them, you can ask the cards: “What is stopping him from taking the first step toward me?”

And if you are caught in deep doubt, or in deep attachment to this person, it is worth turning the question toward yourself: “What is keeping me in this story?” and “What step of mine would truly serve me?”

A case from my practice

People often come to me with yes-or-no questions: “Will I get this job?”, “Will we get married?”, “Will he come back?” Tarot can answer them. But here is a real case from my practice that shows why such questions are a trap.

A client came with the classic request: “Will my ex come back?”

If we had worked in yes-or-no format, I would have pulled the cards and said: “Yes, he will.” She would have left glowing, sat down by the window, and devotedly waited for her happy ending.

Instead of playing coin toss, I suggested we ask the cards proper, open questions:

  1. With what intentions will he show up?
  2. Where would getting back together lead her?

We did the spread, and the picture turned out to be completely different.

Yes, the man was indeed about to reappear. Active cards of steps in her direction came up. But the cards of his intentions screamed self-interest: he was simply tired, he was bored, and he wanted to come back to the place where he is always welcomed and fed with energy.

And on the outcome of rekindling the relationship lay the Five of Swords. A card of painful conflict, disappointment, a situation where one person drains the other and walks away.

Can you feel the difference?

“Yes, he will come back” would have handed her false hope. The open questions gave her clarity and power over the situation.

Seeing the real picture, she understood that his return would be a new round of old problems rather than a victory of love. Instead of spending months waiting for a betrayal, she closed that door and got on with her life.

Tarot is a navigator

Tarot is no crystal ball spitting out dry facts. It is a powerful navigator.

Tarot always reflects our true feelings, our wounds and our grudges. And first of all, the cards help you see your own hidden blind spots, understand your inner state, and see the truth wider than any yes or no.

So the rule is simple: turn the closed question into an open one.

Instead of “Will I find a new job?” ask: “What are my career prospects over the next three months, and what should I do to find the work I dream of?”

Instead of “Does he love me or not?” ask: “What does he really feel for me, and where is this relationship going?”

If this question is aching in you right now

You do not need to arrive with a perfectly worded request. Come with what hurts. We will go through the context together, we will shape the questions to the cards together, and the reading will show you what is really happening between you and which step is truly in your favor.
