Death — Why People Fear This Card for Nothing

The name is scary

Death doesn’t have to mean physical death. On the symbolic path, it’s above all change through an ending.

Big changes. Transformation. Things won’t be the way they were. A cycle coming to its natural end. The old dying off, moving to a new stage. Clearing space for something new to be born.

An ending that makes room for a start

Death is card 13, and it sits right after the Hanged Man and before Temperance. It’s the point where one big stage ends and a completely new state begins.

The person already understands they can’t go on the old way. The Hanged Man gave them a new way of seeing, and Death says: “Now let the old go.” It could be the end of a relationship, a job, a self-image, beliefs, a familiar way of life or a whole period of life. And here, for the first time, a person doesn’t just see their old life differently — they leave part of it behind.

It’s going through a hard crisis. Letting go of old beliefs. Painful but necessary separation from the past. Being reset to zero, ready to be reborn inside.

What it looks like in life

In relationships — drastic change. Often a final breakup or leaving a relationship with no future. Or a radical change in the relationship you’re in — for example, getting through a hard crisis in the family and coming out at a completely different level of closeness. Either way, it won’t be what it was.

A woman once asked: what’s going on between me and him? Death came up. Transformation: this relationship is resetting yet again — something will change sharply, or they’ll split up.

At work — a change of job, being let go, or a project shutting down. Or the end of an old money chapter. A time to drop a strategy that isn’t working and shed what you don’t need, so you free up resources for something new.

The ending isn’t the scary part

The shadow side of this card is an intense fear of change. Clinging hard to the past. Fighting natural processes. It leads to long stagnation, falling apart inside and your life energy draining away.

Let go

The card’s advice: don’t fight change, let the old go. Willingly let go of what no longer serves you, what doesn’t let you grow. Make room for the new.

After a sharp ending, a person shouldn’t rush straight ahead. First they need to put themselves back together, connect their past experience with where they are now and find their balance.
