The Fool — “A New Beginning”

Go with the flow and don’t be afraid

Everything new, freedom, the unknown, new experience. I’d put it this way: let life carry you, and don’t be afraid.

It’s the start of a new path. A blank page, spontaneity, freedom, being open to the world. Complete trust. A step into the unknown, without fear or prejudice. A feeling of inner freedom, lightness, a child’s directness. Being up for experiments. Not being afraid to get it wrong or look silly. The state of “I don’t know where I’ll end up, but I’m dying to find out.”

The open arms on the card say he has nothing to hide. He shows pure intentions, his own complete freedom and his trust in the world.

The Fool isn’t necessarily a fool

He’s at a point where he doesn’t have enough experience yet to know how things will turn out. So the Fool isn’t so much “I don’t understand anything.” It’s more: “I don’t know what will happen, but I’m ready to go.” That’s a big difference.

He hasn’t met the Magician yet, so he doesn’t know everything he’s capable of. He hasn’t met the High Priestess, so he can’t fully rely on his inner knowing. He hasn’t met the Emperor, so he has no structure or plan. But he has the most important thing for starting out — he’s ready to take the first step.

I see the Fool not as a type of person but as the start of a process. So the question isn’t “What kind of person is the Fool?” but “What state is a person in at the start of their path?” And then it’s clear why he’s number 0. His strength is exactly that he isn’t locked into any one role yet.

A step without guarantees — or just being careless

In relationships the Fool means something light, with no strings attached. Romantic adventures, flirting. Or a new relationship where there’s nothing yet — no foundation, no rules. Sometimes it points to a bit of childlike openness coming back into an existing couple, or a spontaneous decision — like suddenly taking off on a trip together.

At work — risky ventures. Starting from scratch. Freelancing, or creative searching. Money here is unstable: feast one day, famine the next.

But the Fool has another side. He can describe a very careless man: “Who looks free and easy, everything’s simple with him, but in fact he’s broke, with no plan in life, nothing.” Immaturity, irresponsibility, carelessness. Not being able to make decisions. Not being able to think through the consequences of what you do.

The saying I connect with this card: “Rules are not written for fools.”

Starting over

The Fool isn’t necessarily reckless risk. Sometimes his main meaning is the ability to start again. After the World the cycle ends, but the Fool appears again. And this time he’s not a person who “knows nothing.” He’s someone who knows a lot and is still ready to step into the unknown again.

The Fool isn’t someone who doesn’t understand anything. He’s someone who doesn’t know yet how his path will end, but takes the first step anyway. That’s exactly why the Fool isn’t an ending, a mistake or stupidity. He’s the moment of freedom before a new experience begins.
