The Devil — “The Devil Is in the Details”

“So what’s still holding you?”

The Devil is card XV. It comes after Temperance and before the Tower. A person has already understood a lot, lived through a lot and let a lot go. And they think: “I think I’ve finally figured it all out.” And the Devil asks: “All of it? Really? So what’s still holding you?”

Temptation. Fear. Addiction, lure. The feeling of being used. Attachment to money and things. Instincts in charge, magnetism.

Meeting your shadow

Here a person meets their shadow. What people usually hide behind a socially acceptable mask. It could be addictions, attachments, fears, money, power, sex, control, jealousy, needing approval, the usual relationship scenarios.

And an important point: the Devil doesn’t only show limits that come from outside. Often a person helps build their own cage. So the Devil’s main question is: “What do I call my lack of freedom, while I keep holding on to it myself?”

What the cage is made of

In relationships — wild passion, very strong physical attraction without a deep spiritual bond. Often it points to toxic relationships, codependency, manipulation, jealousy and abuse. A partner like a drug — bad for you, but you can’t live without them.

At work — great prospects for big money, but with a catch. It points to a golden cage, workaholism, and always the temptation to take a dishonest route.

A man once asked whether a woman would try to get in touch or come back, and under what circumstances. The Devil came up — out of a state of dependence. Dependence on attention, on good, kind human warmth and on how she was treated. And the dependence inside her is only a temporary feeling. And it will be a painful story.

That’s the devil in the details: not chains, but getting used to someone else’s warmth, to attention, to a familiar scenario.

Not just a dark card

At the same time, the Devil isn’t necessarily about something “bad.” It’s also about desire, pleasure, the physical world, the body, life force. On the good side — a huge, raw life energy, if you learn to handle it. The question is whether the person is running it, or it’s running them.

At its darkest — complete enslavement, sinking into addictions, from substances to gambling. Cruelty, a person falling apart under the weight of their vices.

What matters

Admit your hidden desires and weaknesses. Don’t hide your shadow. Don’t let anyone control you. Don’t take the bait. Don’t make shady deals with your conscience.

If a person has seen what’s holding them, the next stage is the Tower — the collapse of the structure that can no longer stand up to the truth.
