This is the start of a new path. A blank page, spontaneity, freedom, openness to the world. Total trust. A step into the unknown, without fear or prejudice. It's a feeling of inner freedom, lightness, childlike openness. A readiness to experiment. No fear of making a mistake or looking silly. The state of “I don't know where I'll end up, but I'm dying to find out.”
What’s on the card
His arms are spread wide, which says he has nothing to hide. He shows pure intentions, his absolute inner freedom and his trust in the world.
In a reading
Main meanings:
- Everything new, new experience.
- Freedom.

- Going with the flow of life and not being afraid.
- A trip.
- The birth of a child.
- A gay man.
- A foreign man.
Relationships: light, no strings attached. Romantic adventures, flirting. Or a new relationship where there’s nothing yet at all — no foundation, no rules. Sometimes it can point to some childlike sincerity coming back into an existing couple, or to a spur-of- the-moment decision — like taking off on a trip together.
Career, money: risky ventures. Starting something from scratch. Or freelancing, or creative searching. Money here is unstable in general: feast today, famine tomorrow. Money comes easily and goes just as easily on spur-of-the-moment wants.
Shadow side
The Fool can describe a very flighty man:
“Who looks free and easygoing, everything’s light and simple with him, but in fact he’s a broke loser with no plan in life, nothing.”
Immaturity, irresponsibility, flightiness. Not being able to make decisions. Not being able to think through the consequences of your actions.
Which way the meaning tips — the good way (a fresh start) or this empty, flighty one — depends on the client’s question and on the cards next to it:

From the wider tradition

- What zero means. The card has no fixed place — it stands both at the start and at the end of the deck: pure, endless potential, when no path has been chosen yet. A new start is possible at any moment.
- A leap of faith. Not just a step into the unknown, but a conscious trust that things will turn out well, with no guarantees: “All I have is what I carry with me, and that’s enough.”
- Naivety and not seeing the danger. The hero walks toward a cliff and doesn’t see the risk — it’s not just lightness, but also blindness to a real threat (on the negative side).
- The start of “the Fool’s Journey.” The whole path of the Major Arcana begins with him; he passes through every card and gains experience. The starting point of the whole path.
- The symbols on the card. The white rose — pure, innocent intentions; the bag over his shoulder — a small load of past experience; the little dog at his feet — instinct that warns of danger.
- In love — a new cycle, so you don’t repeat the old one. A chance to do things differently than in past relationships, without old hurts and calculations.
How my take differs from the books
The Fool isn’t necessarily a fool. He’s at a point where his old experience isn’t yet enough to know in advance how things will end. So the Fool isn’t so much “I don’t understand anything.” It’s more like: “I don’t know what’s going to happen, but I’m ready to go.” That’s a big difference.
He hasn’t gone through the Magician yet, so he doesn’t know everything he’s capable of. He hasn’t gone through the High Priestess yet, so he can’t fully rely on his inner knowing. He hasn’t gone through the Emperor yet, so he has no ready structure or plan. But he has the most important thing for starting out — he’s ready to take the first step.
I look at the Fool not as a description of a person, but as the start of a process. So the question isn’t “What kind of person is the Fool?” but “What state is a person in at the start of their path?” And then it’s clear why he’s number 0. He hasn’t fully formed himself yet. Ahead of him are:
- The Magician — “I can.”
- The High Priestess — “I sense and I know.”
- The Empress — “I create.”
- The Emperor — “I build.”
And the Fool comes before all of that. So his strength is exactly that he isn’t locked into one role yet.
What people get wrong
The Fool isn’t necessarily a reckless risk. Sometimes his main meaning is the ability to start over. After the World the cycle ends, but the Fool shows up again. And then it’s no longer someone who “doesn’t know anything.” It’s someone who knows a lot but is still ready to walk into the unknown again.
The Fool isn’t someone who doesn’t understand anything. He’s someone who doesn’t yet know how his path will end, but takes the first step anyway. And that’s exactly why the Fool isn’t an end, a mistake or foolishness. He’s the point of freedom before a new experience begins.
