The Eclipse (The Hanged Man)

In a reading

• It’s when the usual ways of acting no longer work and you have to look at your life from a different angle.
• As a state, it’s a deep change. Giving up control. It’s a pause, a conscious one: the person knows what they’re doing. It’s a state where a person has to admit they’re powerless against their circumstances.
• Relationships, love: on pause. A drawn-out crisis. Uncertainty. Could be codependency, rescuer syndrome or a victim stance, when one person gives up their own interests for the other. It matters to completely change how you see the situation, to look at it in a new way.
• Career, money: when projects stall, things stagnate, and it’s not the time for action and breakthroughs — that’s what the card can say in a reading. With money — delayed payments.

Shadow side

When a person enjoys their own suffering and manipulates through their victim stance: “Look what I’m going through for you.” Fear of change. Not wanting to face the truth, even if the old pattern of behavior brings pain.

Stage of the journey

If you look at the Major Arcana as a person’s path from the Fool to the World, the Hanged Man comes after Justice and before Death.

What a person has already been through. Before the Hanged Man a person has already gone through: the Fool — started the path, dared to walk into the unknown; the Magician — realized, “I can act”; the High Priestess — learned to listen to their inner knowing; the Empress — created, made things real, felt life; the Emperor — built boundaries and structure; the Hierophant — formed values and a set of views; the Lovers — faced a choice and the responsibility for it; the Chariot — went down the path they chose; Strength — learned to handle themselves, not just their circumstances; the Hermit — turned inward and found their own compass; Wheel of Fortune — ran into changes they can’t fully control; Justice — saw the consequences of their decisions and met reality as it is. And after that comes the Hanged Man.

What happens in the Hanged Man. A person has already done a lot. They’ve tried to act, choose, control, change, understand. But there comes a moment when the usual way doesn’t work anymore. And then life seems to say: “Now stop. Don’t do anything. Look at everything from the other side.” So the Hanged Man isn’t just about sacrifice or doing nothing. It’s a pause between the old understanding of life and the new one. Willingly or not, a person hangs between two states. And the most important thing: they change not the situation, but the way they see it.

Where the Hanged Man leads — to Death, card XIII. The Hanged Man changes how you see the old. Death clears away what can’t go on after that new view. So the path here goes like this:

• Justice: “This is where my decisions led.”
• The Hanged Man: “What if I look at it completely differently?”
• Death: “Then the old can’t stay the way it was.”

So the Hanged Man is a really important point on the path: a person stops trying to push forward at any cost and, for the first time, lets themselves stop to understand where it’s even worth going next.
