Tarot card meaning
No clarity, a secret, a pregnancy, maybe uncertainty. A creative state, or compassion. It can mean a relationship built on pity. By profession a person could be an artist, a musician, or work rotation shifts away from home.
Illusions, hidden fears, the subconscious, intuition. A time of uncertainty.
In a reading
- A journey into your unconscious, where it’s easy to get lost because your senses fool you or because of your own phobias.
- A state of anxiety, confusion, fears you can’t shake, emotional ups and downs. Your thoughts get tangled. Intuition gets sharper, but at the same time there’s a risk of fooling yourself, of taking what you want for what’s real.
- Relationships, love: secret, hidden motives, cheating, things left unsaid. A relationship with lots of illusions and little that’s concrete. Or a long-distance love, or an online romance. Sometimes it points to a deep psychological attachment on a subconscious level.
- Career, money: an unclear situation. Scheming. Hidden financial risks, fraud. Unreliable partners. A creative crisis. Working amid uncertainty.
Shadow side
Paralyzing fears, phobias, manipulation, deceit, slander, sinking into psychosis. Living in a world of illusions and completely losing touch with reality.
The card’s advice
Don’t believe everything you see — a lot is hidden from view right now. Trust your intuition, but check the facts. Don’t give in to panic. Don’t make life-changing decisions on a wave of fear.

Stage of the journey
The Moon is card XVIII; it comes after the Star, XVII, and before the Sun, XIX. This is almost the end of the path. But the paradox is that it’s right here that a person runs into one of the hardest things of all — their unconscious.
What a person has already been through. They come to the Moon after a very long path: the Fool — dared to begin; the Magician — realized they can act; the High Priestess — learned to listen to what’s inside; the Empress — created and made things real; the Emperor — built structure and support; the Hierophant — formed values; the Lovers — learned to choose; the Chariot — moved forward; Strength — learned to handle themselves; the Hermit — looked for answers inside; Wheel of Fortune — ran into change; Justice — saw the consequences of their decisions; the Hanged Man — changed how they see things; Death — let go of the old; Temperance — got their balance back; the Devil — saw their attachments; the Tower — tore down the old structure; the Star — found hope and direction again. And now, the Moon.
What happens. Logic isn’t enough here anymore. A person is walking a road but can’t see the whole path. Ahead of them is fog, familiar fears, memories, fantasies, inner images. The Moon brings up what used to be hidden deeper: unconscious fears; old patterns; anxiety about the unknown; illusions; projections; intuition; strong emotions and images. And the Moon’s main lesson is learning to tell apart what’s really happening from what your own inner world creates. That doesn’t mean the Moon is always deceit or fear. It goes much deeper. A person learns to say: “I don’t understand everything. But I can keep going without making up a false certainty for myself.”
Where the Moon leads — to the Sun, card XIX. And here clarity shows up. The Moon — “I don’t see everything”; the Sun — “Now I see.” After the fog come light, clarity, aliveness and the ability to take in reality much more directly.
So the sequence:
- The Star — I believe again.
- The Moon — I meet my fears and illusions.
- The Sun — I see clearly.
And in short: the Moon is a test of your inner sight. A person has already been through the destruction of the old and found hope, but now has to learn to tell their inner fear from reality so they can come out into the clarity of the Sun.
