• Delegates, controls, organizes. Discipline, stability.
• The Father archetype.

• The Emperor wears a knight’s armor on his legs, too. It says this man is always ready to jump up and do something — but you have to ask him. He won’t figure it out on his own: if it’s a relationship and the woman stays quiet, he thinks everything’s fine and won’t do anything. But if you tell him what’s needed, he’ll get up, go and do it.

• In love and relationships — reliable, steady. Safety, protection, a traditional way of life, patriarchy. There’s not much romance here.
• The card sometimes says you need to set your boundaries.

• The Aries rams on the throne — Mars, will, drive, conquest, leading through force of character.

Stage of the journey

The Emperor is card IV, the fourth step after the Fool. A person is still in the first quarter of the long path here, but is already moving from creating to managing what they’ve created.

What a person has already been through. Before the Emperor a person went through the Fool — dared to step into the unknown; the Magician — saw their abilities and learned to act; the High Priestess — learned to hear their inner knowing and intuition; the Empress — started to create, grow and make things real. And now the question comes up: “How do I keep all this from falling apart?”

The Emperor learns to create structure, boundaries, order and support. If the Empress says, “I created life,” the Emperor answers, “Now I’m responsible for it.” This is responsibility, discipline, rules, power over your own life and the ability to make decisions.

Where the Emperor leads — next comes the Hierophant, card V. And it’s a really interesting shift: the Emperor makes his own rules → the Hierophant starts looking for the deeper meaning behind those rules. After personal power and structure, a person moves on to knowledge, traditions, teachers, values and a worldview.

So the order of the first five cards is like a person growing up:

• The Fool: “I go.”
• The Magician: “I can.”
• The High Priestess: “I know.”
• The Empress: “I create.”
• The Emperor: “I’m responsible.”
• The Hierophant: “And what do I believe in, and what’s it all for?”
